The term "tribal" refers to anything having to do with belonging to a tribe or group. Typically, tribes refer to residents native to a geographical location, for example tribes of Native Americans, Israelites, tribes of South Pacific or African nations, and even ancient tribes of Great Britain like the various clans of the Scots and Celts.

Tribal also refers to a specific style of modern tattoo art fashioned after the simple black swirls, line work, and geometric patterns that were traditional markings of status or badges of honor among various tribes around the world. Most tribal tattoos you see on everyday people have no real meanings (unless it's something personal to the wearer) and are just decorative.
