"Remember, remember! The 5th of November! The gunpowder treason and plot! I know of no reason... Why gunpowder treason should be forgot!" So goes the schoolyard rhyme about the rebellious Guy Fawkes. An English revolutionary, who, in 1605, during the reign of King James I, attempted with several others to blow up Parliament. In England, Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated every November 5th with the burning of Guy Fawkes effigees and a fireworks display.
Dressing up as Guy Fawkes
The British legend of Guy Fawkes gained notoriety in the United States through the recent release of the film V For Vendetta, based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore, the protagonist V wears a Guy Fawkes mask, marking him as a revolutionary who is out to overthrow a corrupt government.
Dress up as Guy Fawkes with a Guy/V for Vendetta mask and a long, straight Guy Fawkes wig and hat. Although a high-quality V for Vendetta costume is available, for a more authentic Fawkes look, try on a Pilgrim or Puritan costume for a 1600s feel complete with buckled shoes and white nylon kneesocks.
