About Flapper

A new type of woman appeared during the Roaring Twenties who drank, smoked, danced, drove cars. did drugs, and had causal sexual relationships: the flapper. Born in the jazz club speakeasies formed from the Prohibition in the United States, flappers were identified by their short bob haircuts, heavy use of makeup, just above-the-knee dresses worn over bound breasts to achieve a boyish figure and layers of long beaded necklaces. Probably known best for their rebellious morals, such as open use of drugs and alcohol, flappers were also known for their racy dances, such as the Charleston. Politically, flappers challenged women’s roles in the workplace and promoted women’s rights such as voting. After becoming a part of mainstream culture at the end of the 1920s, the carefree flapper attitude collapsed with the Stock Market Crash of 1929.

Dressing up as Flapper

To be the cat’s pajama’s at your party, get dolled up in a knee length fringed dress of any color that shows off your shimming during the Charleston. Add a pair of black fishnet stockings to draw attention to your thoroughly modern exposed calves. A bob wig with a feathered headband is the bees knees on a flapper dame. Throw on a beaded necklace with a feathered boa and you’ll be ready to step out with your gangster beau.
