Animated sex symbol of the 1930s, the cartoon character Betty Boop is a flapper from the black and white Talkatoon and Betty Boop films produced by Paramount Pictures in the 1930s. Reminding the Depression era audiences of the easier days of the Roaring Twenties, Betty Boop’s cartoons were popular with adult audiences for their surreal sexual elements. The first cartoon character with a distinctly defined female body, Betty Boops film themes often flaunted her sexual curves in front of lusting men who would try to take her virginity, a fate which she would narrowly escape. After censorship from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) in 1934 for the sexual nature of the cartoon, Betty Boop was presented to audiences with demure outfits and musical themes aimed at children, after this, her popularity dwindled and her last film debuted in 1939. In the 1980s, licensed merchandise featuring Betty Boop was distributed and put her early sexy flapper image back into pop culture. Today, Betty Boop is most often seen in this merchandise, but she also pops up in various cartoons and TV shows as a walk-on character.
