The Roman military conquered much of the ancient world at the height of the Roman Empire's power between 800 and 500 B.C. Three hundred years isn't too shabby of a time for being on top! In Roman society, the Emperor almost always stood with his men in the Roman army and were accomplished generals in the field, as well as in front of the Senate. Some of the most famous Roman Soldiers and military leaders included Julius Caesar, Marc Anthony, and the Emperor Trajan -- also known as the Kind-Hearted Solider who made several improvements to Rome during his reign. The HBO television show, "Rome" also showed an in-depth look at some of the lives of Roman soldiers who came from all ranks and classes of society.

Dressing as an Adult Roman Soldier

Arm yourself in the battle gear of a Roman Soldier for a fierce, yet classic costuming choice. From head to toe, you're covered. Strap on a pair of Roman Sandals that lace up around your calves. Several regal versions of the Roman chestplate armor are available in either gold- or silver-tone and constructed of lightweight, rubber or plastic material, yet giving the look of hammered metal rich with intricate details. Put on a chestplate and the armor skirt of a Roman Soldier with a long t-shirt in a deep color like maroon underneath. (Yes, Roman soldiers wore t-shirt like tunics, too in addition to the more commonly seen toga as a means to prevent their armor from chafing.) Top it off with a plumed Roman helmet and carry some of the famed weaponry that the Romans were noted for on their conquering trail. Arm guards and shin guards are also a nice touch. Pick up toy versions of a Roman sword and large, decorated Roman shield to complete your costume.
